Leadership Improved as Major Indices Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The S&P 500 traded up as much as +1.3% at its session high before closing +0.6% higher. The S&P 500 opened above its 50-day moving average (5,948) and stayed above that level throughout the session. The Nasdaq Composite closed +1.2% higher, meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (-0.1%) and Russell 2000 (-0.1%) both lost ground. The volume totals were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 5-4 margin at the NYSE and advancers narrowly ed decliners at the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 25 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, more than doubling the 11 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices' uptrend has come under pressure (M criteria). Disciplined investors know that new buying efforts are only to be made in stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index recently found support near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
Seven S&P 500 sectors closed lower while four settled higher. The rate-sensitive utilities (-1.1%) and real estate (-1.4%) sectors had the largest losses. The communication services (+2.1%) and information technology (+1.4%) sectors were top gainers, reflecting leadership from mega cap and chipmaker components. NVIDIA (NVDA +3.4%) outperformed ahead of CEO Jensen Huang's keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The 10-yr yield settled at 4.61%.
